This is a key person insurance comparison of the nine insurers writing key person cover in the UK in 2026, taken from each one's own published adviser material rather than from anybody's summary of it.
Maximum life cover ranges from £5m to £15m and critical illness conditions from 36 to 55 — but the things that decide more are the application route, the disability definition, and the one no table here has a column for.
Before any table is useful, one thing has to be settled: which of three products you are actually comparing. All three get called key person insurance, and they do not cost the same.
These are the three options in this site's own cover calculator, with the premium multiplier that calculator applies to each. Adding critical illness to life cover does not add a little — on the same cover amount, for the same person, it is the single largest swing in the model.
The multipliers are the calculator's own, shown here so you can see what is driving the number rather than being handed a total. Indicative modelling, not a quote.
Every provider here is rated out of 5 against the same five criteria, in this order. Three of the five are matters of published fact. Two are editorial judgement, and this page says which are which rather than presenting all five as measurement.
This comparison is reviewed at least quarterly to reflect product changes and new entrants. Select a criterion to see what it is drawn from.
Read a comparison table by column rather than by row and the shape of the market changes. On maximum life cover six of the nine are identical. On critical illness conditions the spread is 36 to 55. On application route the nine split cleanly into two groups, and that split matters more than either number.
Select a criterion to rank all nine on it. Every figure comes from that insurer's own published adviser material.
Premiums are deliberately not compared here: they depend on age, health, occupation, term and smoker status, so a premium column would be a made-up number wearing a table's authority.
This is the question the comparison table cannot answer, and it is the one people arrive at this page asking. Key person cover pays on death, and — if critical illness is added — on a defined list of conditions. Long-term incapacity that is not on that list is a different product.
The ABI's 2025 claims data makes the difference visible. Across all UK insurers, 96.7% of individual life claims were paid and 90.2% of critical illness claims — but only 66.7% of total permanent disability claims, from just 393 claims in the whole market.
Legal & General's own adviser page shows why the definition matters more than the condition count: its maximum critical illness cover is £3m under a Specific Work Task disability definition and £2m under Own Occupation. Same insurer, same product, different definition, £1m of difference.
Premiums can vary between providers for cover that looks identical on a table and is not. Almost every one of those differences traces back to one of eight decisions that were made differently on each side.
Work through them and you will be comparing the same thing. Nothing you enter here leaves this browser.
Cover is not a preference; it is an arithmetic. This site's calculator sums three things — the profit contribution you would lose, what it costs to recruit and train a replacement, and any business debt secured against that person.
The premium it then shows is a model, not a quote. It moves on age, on smoker status, and on cover type, using the same rates the calculator page uses. Every input and every step is shown so you can see what is producing the figure.
Illustrative estimate only. keyperson.quest is a comparison and information resource, not an insurer or a broker. Actual cover and premiums depend on your circumstances and on underwriting.
People searching for a key person comparison are often really trying to work out who to talk to, and the three things involved are easy to confuse because all three use the word compare.
Three of the nine insurers here — Scottish Widows, Canada Life and LV= — can only be accessed through an FCA-authorised adviser at all. That is not a small operational detail; for a third of this table it decides whether you can proceed on your own.
This page is the third thing on that list, and it is the one with no regulatory permission of any kind. That is stated here rather than in a footer.

Our methodology for rating and comparing UK keyman insurance providers
Our comprehensive key person insurance comparison evaluates 9 leading UK providers across five core criteria: cover limits (maximum life and critical illness sums assured), critical illness breadth (number of conditions covered), claims record (published payout rates and speed), flexibility (trust options, payment holidays, cover increases), and value (competitive pricing relative to cover quality).
Each provider in our key person insurance comparison is rated out of 5 based on these weighted criteria. We review our comparison table at least quarterly to reflect product changes, new entrants, and updated claims data from the ABI.
Important: keyperson.quest is an independent information resource with no commercial relationships with any insurer. We do not receive commissions, referral fees, or any payment from the providers listed. Our ratings reflect our independent assessment to help UK businesses compare key person insurance options objectively through our detailed comparison analysis.
Which keyman insurance provider suits your business? Compare key person insurance comparison options by sector.
Startups & Early-Stage Companies — Need lower cover amounts and fast applications. In our key person insurance comparison, Vitality and Royal London offer streamlined processes with competitive rates for younger founders. Cover from £100k–£500k is typical.
SMEs (10–50 employees) — Mid-range cover with combined life and critical illness. Our comparison shows Aviva and Legal & General offer the best breadth of cover, with L&G providing up to £10m life cover for larger businesses.
Professional Services (Accountants, Solicitors, Consultants) — Higher cover amounts for multiple key people. In our key person insurance comparison, Zurich's 55 critical illness conditions make it particularly strong for professional services firms where long-term illness is a greater risk than death.
Tech Companies — Often need cover for technical co-founders whose skills are difficult to replace. Consider combined key person insurance comparison with shareholder protection for equity-holding founders. See our tech industry guide.
Construction & Trades — Higher-risk occupations may face premium loadings from some insurers. Our comparison shows AIG is typically most competitive for manual workers and hazardous occupations. See our construction industry guide.
The best key person insurance provider depends on your business needs. Consider these factors when comparing.
If you need more than £5m cover, Legal & General and Aviva are your best options. For smaller amounts, all providers are competitive.
Zurich covers 55 conditions - more than any other provider. If comprehensive CI cover is important, Zurich leads.
Vitality offers discounts for healthy lifestyles. If your key person is active and health-conscious, Vitality could save 15-25% on premiums.
All major providers offer business trusts, but some make the process simpler. Legal & General and Aviva have the most straightforward trust setup.
Check each provider's claims payout rate. All major UK insurers pay 95%+ of claims, but some have faster processing times.
LV= offers payment holidays, Royal London is customer-owned (mutual), and most providers allow cover increases without full re-underwriting.

Our methodology for rating and comparing UK key person insurance providers
This comparison covers nine leading UK insurers offering key person protection products in 2026: Aviva, Legal & General, Zurich, Royal London, Vitality, AIG, Scottish Widows, Canada Life and LV=.
Data sources: Each provider’s published adviser site or product profile. We do not collect or estimate data; every figure links to the insurer’s own published source. Where insurers update product limits or features, we re-verify on a quarterly basis.
What we don’t compare: We don’t compare premiums in this table because actual premiums depend on individual underwriting (age, health, occupation, cover term, smoker status). For indicative pricing guidance, see our cost guide.
Editorial standards: keyperson.quest is an independent information resource with no commercial relationships with any insurer. We do not receive commissions, referral fees, or any payment from the providers listed. We are not FCA-authorised — for regulated advice, consult a qualified professional or visit MoneyHelper.

They are the same product. "Key person insurance" is the modern, gender-neutral term used by the industry. "Keyman insurance" and "key man insurance" are older terms still widely used. All three refer to business protection that pays out if an essential employee dies or becomes critically ill. Our key person insurance comparison covers all providers regardless of which term you use.
Not necessarily. Some providers (Legal & General, Aviva, Zurich, Royal London, Vitality, AIG) allow direct applications online. Others (Scottish Widows, Canada Life, LV=) require an FCA-regulated adviser. An adviser can help ensure you get the right level of cover and optimal tax treatment. Our comparison helps you research providers before speaking with an adviser.
Not in the traditional sense. Hiscox's key person insurance is a variant of personal accident cover — it pays a lump sum (typically between £5,000 and £100,000) if someone vital to your business is unable to work after an accidental injury, rather than a multi-million-pound life or critical illness policy. For traditional key person life insurance you would use a life insurer such as Legal & General, Aviva or Zurich. See our full Hiscox key man insurance review for how the two approaches compare.
